Online Baccarat: Rules, Third-Card Chart and the Best Bets

Online baccarat is the casino card game in which you bet on which of two hands — Player or Banker — will finish closer to 9. There are no decisions to make once you have bet: fixed rules decide every card.

The Banker bet has the lowest house edge in the game, 1.06%, even after the usual 5% commission; the Tie bet, which pays 8:1, has a house edge of over 14%. In the UAE, the only licensed place to play baccarat online is Play971.

Baccarat looks complicated because of the drawing rules and the scoreboards around the table, but the player’s side of it is simple: choose a bet, and the cards do the rest. This guide explains how a round works, the third-card rules in full, what each bet really pays and costs in dirhams, the main variants — from no-commission and speed baccarat to Lightning Baccarat and Dragon Tiger — what the “roads” on the scoreboard can and cannot tell you, and where baccarat stands in the UAE. Licensed online baccarat in the UAE Play971 only — eight digital games and live tables from AED 10 to AED 100,000 per hand

How to Play Baccarat

01

Place your bet on Player, Banker or Tie, plus any side bets. You can only bet; you never play a hand yourself. “Player” and “Banker” are simply the names of the two hands.

02

Two cards are dealt to each hand, face up in online games.

03

Naturals are checked. If either hand totals 8 or 9 — a “natural” — both hands stand and the round is settled.

04

The Player hand may draw a third card under the fixed rules below.

05

The Banker hand may draw a third card, depending on its own total and, if the Player drew, on the Player’s third card.

06

The higher total wins. Winning Player bets pay 1:1; winning Banker bets pay 1:1 minus 5% commission; a tie pays 8:1 on the Tie bet and returns Player and Banker bets.

Card Values and Hand Totals

Card Value
Ace 1
2 to 9 Face value
10, jack, queen, king 0

A hand’s total is only the last digit of the sum of its cards, so the highest possible total is 9. A 7 and an 8 make 15, which counts as 5; a 9 and a king make 9; a 5 and a 5 make 10, which counts as 0 — “baccarat”, the worst hand, which gives the game its name. A hand can never go over 9, so there is no busting in baccarat.

The Third-Card Rules

The drawing rules look intimidating, but you never have to apply them — the dealer or the software does. They matter only because they explain why the Banker hand wins slightly more often: the Banker draws last, knowing whether the Player drew and what it drew.

When the Player hand draws

Player’s first two cards total Player hand
0 – 5 Draws a third card
6 – 7 Stands
8 – 9 Natural — both hands stand

The Player hand’s rule is simple; the Banker’s third card depends on the Player’s third card, which the dealer applies automatically, so you never have to decide anything.

When the Banker hand draws

If the Player hand stood on 6 or 7, the Banker draws on 0–5 and stands on 6–7. If the Player drew a third card, the Banker’s move depends on its total and on the value of that card:

Banker total Banker draws when the Player’s third card is Banker stands when it is
0 – 2 Any card —
3 0–7, 9 8
4 2–7 0, 1, 8, 9
5 4–7 0–3, 8, 9
6 6–7 0–5, 8, 9
7 Never Any card

These are the punto banco rules used in almost every online and live game. In older versions such as chemin de fer, players could choose whether to draw on some totals, but that does not apply online.

Baccarat third-card rules chart: when the Banker hand draws or stands, by Banker total and the Player's third card

The Three Main Bets: Player, Banker and Tie

Bet Wins Pays Probability (8 decks) House edge
Banker When the Banker hand wins 1:1 minus 5% commission (19:20) 45.86% win, 9.52% push 1.06%
Player When the Player hand wins 1:1 44.62% win, 9.52% push 1.24%
Tie (8:1) When the hands are equal 8:1 9.52% 14.36%
Tie (9:1) When the hands are equal 9:1 9.52% 4.84%

Probabilities and edges: our calculation for eight decks, counting every possible deal. With six decks the Banker and Player edges are the same to two decimals, and the 8:1 Tie edge is 14.44%.

Leaving ties aside, the Banker hand wins 50.68% of the time and the Player hand 49.32%. That small gap is why the casino charges commission on Banker wins: without it, the Banker bet would give the player an edge of about 1.2%.

Baccarat bets ranked by house edge, from Banker at 1.06% to Tie at 8:1 at 14.36%, eight decks

Why the Banker Bet Pays Commission

On a winning AED 100 Banker bet you receive AED 95, not AED 100: AED 5 is kept as commission. In live casinos the dealer used to track it with markers and collect it at the end of the shoe; online it is simply deducted from each win.

Even with the commission, Banker is the best bet on the table, because the commission is smaller than the Banker hand’s advantage. The difference is small — 1.06% against 1.24% — but over a long session it adds up, and it is the only real choice that affects the cost of playing baccarat.

No-Commission Baccarat

Many tables, including two of Play971’s digital games, advertise “no commission”. Instead of taking 5% from every Banker win, they pay only half when the Banker wins with a total of 6 — an AED 100 bet returns AED 50 profit instead of AED 100 — and pay even money on all other Banker wins. The trade looks attractive, but the house edge on the Banker bet rises from 1.06% to about 1.46%, by our calculation. The Player bet is unchanged at 1.24%, so at a no-commission table the Player bet becomes the cheaper of the two.

On AED 1,000 bet on Banker, that means losing about AED 14.60 on average at a no-commission table instead of AED 10.60.

Baccarat in Dirhams: What the Edge Means

100 hands at AED 100 Banker (with commission) Player Banker (no commission) Tie at 8:1
Total wagered AED 10,000 AED 10,000 AED 10,000 AED 10,000
Expected loss About AED 106 About AED 124 About AED 146 About AED 1,436

Our illustration. Expected loss = total wagered × house edge. Actual results in any session will vary widely.

The table makes the point plainly: the choice between Banker and Player matters little; the Tie bet costs more than ten times as much.

Baccarat Side Bets

Most online tables offer optional side bets. They pay large multiples, and almost all carry a much higher house edge than the main bets.

Side bet Wins when Typical pays House edge
Player Pair / Banker Pair The first two cards of that hand are a pair 11:1 About 10.4% (our calculation, eight decks)
Dragon Bonus — Player The Player wins by a natural, or by 4 points or more Up to 30:1 for a 9-point win 2.65%
Dragon Bonus — Banker The same, for the Banker hand Up to 30:1 9.37%
Tie The hands are equal 8:1 14.36%

Dragon Bonus: our calculation for eight decks, with the standard pay table — 30:1 for a 9-point win down to 1:1 for a 4-point win or a natural.

The Player Dragon Bonus is the only common side bet that comes close to the main bets for cost. If you play side bets at all, treat them as a small entertainment budget and keep your main stake on Banker or Player.

Baccarat Variants

Variant How it differs
Punto banco The standard casino game described in this guide — fixed drawing rules, the house banks every bet
Mini baccarat The same rules at a smaller table with lower limits, dealt by one dealer
Speed baccarat Live baccarat with shorter betting windows and cards dealt face up at once — a round takes well under half a minute
Squeeze baccarat Cards are revealed slowly, bending them at the corners, for suspense — popular in Asia, with the same odds
No-commission baccarat No 5% commission, but Banker wins with 6 pay half — Banker edge about 1.46%
Lightning Baccarat Evolution’s version, in which random “Lightning Cards” add multipliers to winning bets, paid for by a fee on every bet
Chemin de fer and baccarat banque Older European forms in which players take turns as banker and some drawing decisions are optional — rare online
Dragon Tiger A one-card relative of baccarat, explained below

Most variants change the pace or the presentation, not the odds; the two that do change the cost are no-commission baccarat and multiplier games such as Lightning Baccarat.

Dragon Tiger

Dragon Tiger is baccarat reduced to one card per hand. One card is dealt to “Dragon” and one to “Tiger”, and the higher card wins; aces are low and kings high. Dragon and Tiger bets pay 1:1, but when the two cards tie, those bets lose half their stake. That rule gives the game a house edge of 3.73% on the main bets — more than three times that of the Banker bet in baccarat. The Tie bet in Dragon Tiger, at 8:1, has a house edge of 32.77% (our calculation, eight decks). It is fast and simple, but it is a more expensive game than baccarat. Play971 offers four live Dragon Tiger tables and a digital version.

Live Baccarat vs RNG Baccarat

Item RNG (digital) baccarat Live dealer baccarat
Cards Dealt by a random number generator, usually reshuffled each round Real cards from an eight-deck shoe
Speed As fast as you click About 25–50 seconds a round; faster at speed tables
Minimum stakes Often very low From AED 10 on Play971’s Bronze tables
Scoreboards Sometimes Almost always, with the full set of “roads”
Odds The same for the same rules and number of decks

The odds are the same at both; the choice is between the speed and low stakes of RNG tables and the real cards and scoreboards of live ones.

Baccarat Scoreboards and “Roads”

Live baccarat tables show a scoreboard of past results, drawn in several formats called “roads”. They come from Asian casinos, where many players track patterns:

  • Bead Plate — every result in order, one circle per hand.
  • Big Road — runs of Banker or Player wins in columns, a new column whenever the winner changes.
  • Big Eye Boy, Small Road and Cockroach Pig — “derived roads” that summarise whether the Big Road is forming regular or irregular patterns.

The roads are an accurate record of what happened, but they cannot predict what happens next. Each hand is dealt from the shoe by the same fixed rules, and the house edge on each bet is the same whatever the scoreboard shows. Removed cards make tiny differences that only a computer could track, and those differences are too small to overcome the edge in normal play.

Baccarat Strategy: What Works and What Doesn’t

Because the drawing rules are fixed, baccarat strategy comes down to which bet you make and how much you stake. What works:

  • Bet on Banker at a commission table — it has the lowest house edge.
  • Bet on Player at a no-commission table, where the Banker’s edge rises to about 1.46%.
  • Avoid the Tie bet — even at 9:1 it costs 4.84%, more than four times the Banker bet.
  • Treat side bets as optional entertainment, and keep them small.
  • Set a stake that fits your budget — a live table can play 60 or more hands an hour.

What does not work: following the roads, “betting the streak”, switching sides after a loss, or staking systems such as Martingale (doubling after every loss). They change when you win and lose, and how large your swings are, but not the house edge. Martingale in particular runs into the table maximum or your budget after a run of losses — eight Banker losses in a row at AED 50 starting stake require a ninth bet of AED 12,800.

Baccarat Myths

Myth Reality
“The roads show which side is due” Past results do not change the odds of the next hand
“Banker always wins in the long run, so bet it every time” Banker wins slightly more often, but the commission means you still lose about 1.06% of what you wager
“The Tie is due after a long time without one” The Tie probability stays at about 9.5% every hand
“No-commission tables are always better” They raise the Banker edge from 1.06% to about 1.46%
“You can count cards in baccarat like in blackjack” The effect of removed cards is far too small to beat the edge in practice
“Baccarat is a game only for high rollers” Live tables on Play971 start at AED 10, and digital games lower still

Every myth here assumes that past hands affect the next one. They do not: the Banker edge stays at 1.06% and the Tie at about 9.5% on every hand.

A Short History of Baccarat

Popular accounts trace baccarat to fifteenth-century Italy, but the game is first clearly documented in nineteenth-century France, where two versions took hold: chemin de fer, in which the bank passes from player to player, and baccarat banque, with a fixed banker. Ian Fleming’s first James Bond novel, Casino Royale (1953), centres on a game of chemin de fer.

The version played today, punto banco, in which the casino banks every bet and all drawing is fixed, developed in Latin America and reached Las Vegas around 1959. It became the dominant table game in Asian casinos, above all in Macau, where it is by far the most played table game, and it is the game most associated with high-stakes play. Online, baccarat moved early into live dealer studios, which now offer dozens of variations.

Baccarat on Play971

Play971, run by Coin Technology Projects LLC, is the only online casino licensed by the UAE’s federal regulator, the GCGRA, so it is the only place where people in the UAE can legally play baccarat online. Opened from the UAE on 21 October 2026, its Baccarat category listed eight digital games — Play971 Baccarat Triple Treat, two versions of Baccarat, Baccarat No Commission, Baccarat Supreme, Baccarat Supreme No Commission, Baccarat Triple Treat and Dragon Tiger — and its live casino had these tables, with limits per hand in dirhams:

Live table Limits per hand
Baccarat Bronze AED 10 – 5,000
Baccarat Silver AED 20 – 10,000
Baccarat Gold AED 50 – 20,000
Baccarat Platinum AED 100 – 50,000
VIP Speed Baccarat AED 300 – 100,000
Dragon Tiger Bronze / Silver / Gold / Platinum From AED 10 – 5,000 to AED 100 – 50,000

Play is in dirhams, you must be 21 or over and physically in the UAE, and accounts are verified with an Emirates ID. Before you play, open each game’s help screen to check whether it takes commission or uses the no-commission rule, and how the Tie is paid.

Play971 Baccarat category opened from the UAE on 21 October 2026, showing eight games including Baccarat No Commission and Dragon Tiger

Baccarat at Wynn Al Marjan Island

The UAE has no casino open yet. The first, Wynn Al Marjan Island in Ras Al Khaimah, holds the GCGRA’s only land-based gaming licence and is expected to open in September 2027. The GCGRA lists baccarat among the typical games of a licensed land-based facility, and Wynn also runs two resorts in Macau, where baccarat is the leading table game. The operator has not yet published the table mix or limits for Ras Al Khaimah. Our Ras Al Khaimah casino guide explains who will be allowed in.

The licence itself is already in place: on 4 October 2024 the GCGRA issued the resort’s operating company, listed on its register as Island 3 AMI FZ-LLC, the UAE’s first commercial gaming facility licence.

Is Online Baccarat Legal in the UAE?

Only on Play971. Gambling in the UAE is legal only through operators licensed by the GCGRA. Baccarat at offshore online casinos — including those licensed in Curaçao, Malta or Anjouan — is unlicensed gambling under UAE law: Article 461 of the Crimes and Penalties Law (Federal Decree-Law No. 31 of 2021) punishes whoever gambles with up to two years in prison or a fine of up to AED 50,000. Free baccarat games with no cash prizes are a different matter. Our UAE gambling laws guide explains the full picture.

On Play971 you can play baccarat legally in dirhams, at digital and live tables — see Baccarat on Play971 above for the tables and limits.

How to Choose a Baccarat Table

01

Check the commission rule. At a 5% commission table, bet Banker; at a no-commission table, Player is cheaper.

02

Check how the Tie pays. 9:1 is far better than 8:1 — but both cost more than Banker or Player.

03

Pick limits that fit your budget. Your bankroll should cover at least 30–40 minimum bets.

04

Choose your pace. Speed tables play many more hands per hour, so the same edge costs more per hour.

05

Ignore the scoreboard when choosing what to bet.

06

Keep side bets small, or skip them.

Common Baccarat Mistakes

  • Betting the Tie because it pays 8:1.
  • Betting Banker at a no-commission table without realising the edge has risen.
  • Chasing patterns on the roads.
  • Doubling after losses until the table limit or the budget runs out.
  • Playing speed baccarat with a large stake, so that the hours add up quickly.
  • Playing bonus money on baccarat without checking whether it counts towards the wagering requirement — see our bonuses guide.

Baccarat on Mobile

Baccarat suits a phone better than most casino games: there are only three main betting areas and no decisions during the hand. Live tables usually offer a simplified mobile layout with the scoreboard collapsed. Play971 has no app; it runs in the browser at play971.ae. Our casino apps guide explains the difference between apps and mobile sites.

Because Play971 must confirm that you are in the UAE, it checks your location on mobile too: its help centre tells Android users to give the browser permission for precise location, and its games will not open with location services switched off. Any download that calls itself the “Play971 app” does not come from the operator.

Play Responsibly

Baccarat is quick and needs no decisions, which makes it easy to play for longer, and at higher stakes, than you meant to. Decide your budget in dirhams before you sit down, choose a stake that gives you plenty of hands, and stop when the budget is gone. Never raise your bets to win back losses, and remember that the scoreboard records the past — it does not tell you the future. If gambling is no longer fun, confidential help is available from BeGambleAware.
