Online Slots: How They Work, RTP and Popular Games

Online slots are casino games in which a random number generator decides where the reels stop on every spin.

Two numbers describe any slot: its RTP — the share of all money staked that it pays back over millions of spins, usually 94% to 97% — and its volatility, which decides whether those returns come as frequent small wins or rare large ones. Nothing you do changes either number. In the UAE, the only licensed place to play slots online is Play971.

Slots are the biggest category in every online casino lobby and the one where players understand least about what they are playing. This guide explains how a slot really works, what RTP and volatility mean in dirhams, why the same game can pay back different amounts at different casinos, how the main types and features work, which slots UAE players search for most, and where slots stand under UAE law — online, on Play971, and at the Wynn Al Marjan casino due to open in Ras Al Khaimah. Game figures come from the providers’ own websites. Last reviewed: 21 October 2026.

Best Online Casinos to Play Slots in Dubai in 2026

These are the casinos we rate. The slots each one offers, and the RTP version it runs for each game, vary by operator, so check a game’s information screen before you play. Play971, at the top, is the only one licensed by the UAE’s GCGRA; the others are licensed abroad. Read how RTP works before you choose a game.

How Online Slots Work

A slot looks like a machine with spinning reels, but the reels are only a display. The result is decided the moment you press spin, by a random number generator — software that produces numbers continuously and without pattern. The game maps the number drawn for your spin to a position on each reel, and the animation then shows you that result. Whether you stop the reels early, play on autoplay or wait between spins, the outcome was already fixed.

Every slot is built from the same parts:

Part What it is Why it matters
Reels and rows The grid of symbols — 5×3 is the classic layout, 6×5 and 7×7 are common in modern games Bigger grids usually mean more ways to win and more complex maths
Paylines or ways The patterns that count as a win — fixed lines, “ways” counting any adjacent reels, or “pay anywhere” More lines do not mean better odds; the RTP is set across all of them
Paytable What each symbol combination pays, as a multiple of your stake Shows where the value sits — usually in the bonus round
RTP The long-run percentage of stakes returned as winnings Sets the cost of playing
Volatility How spread out the wins are Sets how bumpy the ride is
Hit frequency How often a spin returns anything at all A “win” smaller than your stake is still a loss

Because each spin is independent, a slot has no memory. It is never “due” to pay, and a big win does not make the next one less likely. Online slots used by licensed operators are tested by independent laboratories against standards such as GLI-19, the Gaming Laboratories International standard for online gaming systems.

A Short History of Slot Machines

The slot machine is more than 130 years old. Its modern form dates to the Liberty Bell, built by Charles Fey in San Francisco around 1895: three reels, five symbols — horseshoes, diamonds, spades, hearts and a cracked Liberty Bell — and an automatic payout for three bells. Fruit symbols, still used today, arrived in the early twentieth century, when machines paid in chewing gum where cash prizes were banned.

Electromechanical machines in the 1960s made larger hoppers and bigger prizes possible, and in 1976 the first true video slot appeared in Las Vegas, replacing the reels with a screen. Once the reels were only a picture, the number of symbols, lines and features was no longer limited by physical space. Online casinos followed in the mid-1990s and took slots with them; the 2010s brought the mechanics that dominate today’s lobbies — Megaways, launched by Big Time Gaming in 2016, cluster pays, tumbling reels and bonus buys.

The basic idea has not changed in 130 years: you pay to spin, a random result decides the prize, and the machine keeps a share over time. What has changed is speed, complexity and how much a single spin can win or lose.

RTP Explained

Return to player (RTP) is the percentage of all money staked on a slot that it is designed to pay back over its lifetime. A slot with a 96.5% RTP returns, on average, AED 96.50 for every AED 100 wagered; the other AED 3.50 is the house edge. That average is calculated over millions or billions of spins — over one evening, your result can be anything.

What matters in practice is that the house edge applies to the total amount you wager, not to the money you deposit. Winnings that you play again are wagered again:

Example session 96.5% RTP 94.5% RTP
Stake per spin AED 2 AED 2
Spins played 500 500
Total wagered AED 1,000 AED 1,000
Expected loss AED 35 AED 55
Typical real result Anywhere from losing the whole budget to a large win — the expectation only appears over very long play

Our illustration. Expected loss = total wagered × (100% − RTP).

RTP is the single most useful number for comparing slots, but it does not tell you how often you will win or how big wins will be. That is volatility.

Same Slot, Different RTP

Many players do not know that the same slot can run at different RTPs at different casinos. Several large providers certify each game at more than one setting and let the casino choose which version to run. Pragmatic Play publishes 96.50% as the RTP of Gates of Olympus, and lower-RTP builds of its games, such as 95.51% and 94.50%, are widely reported in casino lobbies. Play’n GO’s Book of Dead has a top setting of 96.21%, and lower certified versions are in circulation.

The game looks and plays identically; only the maths differs. Over AED 10,000 of total wagering, the gap between a 96.21% and a 94.25% version is about AED 196 in expected losses. To check which version you are playing:

  1. Open the game’s information or paytable screen, usually behind an “i” or menu icon.
  2. Find the line headed “RTP” or “theoretical return” — that is the version running in your session.
  3. Compare it with the provider’s published figure, such as those in our tables below.
  4. If the casino’s version is lower, the same game will cost you more to play there.

Volatility: Low, Medium and High

Volatility, also called variance, describes how a slot distributes its RTP. Two slots with the same 96% RTP can feel completely different: one pays small amounts often; the other goes long stretches without paying and then pays a large multiple of the stake.

Volatility How it feels Budget needed Suits
Low Frequent small wins, few big ones Lower — the balance moves slowly Long sessions on a fixed budget
Medium A mix of regular wins and occasional bigger features Moderate Most players
High Long dry spells, most value in rare bonus rounds Higher — losing streaks are normal Players chasing large multipliers who accept losing the budget

Providers do not all publish volatility in the same way — some use a 1–5 scale, others words. Many modern slots with huge maximum multipliers are high volatility by design: the large prizes are paid for by many spins that return little. If your budget is small, a high-volatility game is more likely to end your session before the bonus round arrives.

Types of Online Slots

Type How it works Examples
Classic slots Three reels, few lines, fruit and 7 symbols, simple features Fruit and “hot” slots, many Endorphina titles
Video slots Five or more reels with free spins, wilds and themed bonus rounds Starburst, The Dog House, Book of Dead
Megaways Each reel shows a changing number of symbols, so the number of ways to win changes every spin — up to 117,649 in the original design Megaways titles from many providers
Pay anywhere and cluster pays Wins for enough matching symbols anywhere on the grid, or in touching groups, usually with tumbling reels Gates of Olympus, Sweet Bonanza, Sugar Rush
Hold and win / money symbols Special symbols with cash values lock in place while you get extra respins Big Bass Bonanza’s money-symbol feature works on a similar idea
Bonus buy You pay a fixed multiple of your stake to go straight to the bonus round Gates of Olympus 1000 (100× the bet)
Progressive jackpot Part of every stake feeds a jackpot that grows until someone wins it Mega Moolah
Branded slots Built on a film, TV show or game-show licence Wheel of Fortune titles from IGT

“Crash” games such as Aviator often sit next to slots in a lobby, but they work differently: you cash out before a rising multiplier crashes. They are common in crypto casinos, alongside in-house games such as Dice, Mines and Plinko — our crypto casinos guide explains how those work.

Types of online slots: classic, video, Megaways, pay anywhere, cluster pays, money symbols, bonus buy and progressive jackpot

Slot Features Explained

Feature What it does What to know
Wild Substitutes for other symbols to complete wins Expanding, sticky and multiplier wilds are variations
Scatter Pays or triggers the bonus wherever it lands Usually three or four trigger free spins
Free spins A set number of spins at no cost, often with extra features Much of a slot’s RTP is concentrated here
Multipliers Multiply a win by 2× or more Gates of Olympus multipliers reach 500×; Sweet Bonanza’s 100×
Tumbling (cascading) reels Winning symbols disappear and new ones fall in, allowing several wins per spin Common in pay-anywhere and cluster games
Expanding symbol A symbol grows to fill its reel The core feature of Book of Dead’s free spins
Retrigger Landing scatters during free spins adds more spins Some games retrigger differently — Big Bass Bonanza adds spins and raises its multiplier with every fourth wild collected
Bonus buy Buys immediate entry to the bonus Costs a large multiple of the stake per purchase; it changes how fast you spend, not the house edge

Features decide how a slot pays out — in frequent small wins or rare big ones — but not how much it pays back, which is set by its RTP.

Slot Provider Published RTP Main mechanic
Starburst NetEnt 96.09% 5×3, 10 lines, expanding wilds with respins
Sweet Bonanza Pragmatic Play 96.48% Pay anywhere, tumbling reels, multipliers up to 100×
Gates of Olympus Pragmatic Play 96.50% 6 reels, pay anywhere, multipliers up to 500×
Big Bass Bonanza Reel Kingdom, distributed by Pragmatic Play 96.71% Money symbols up to 2,000×, collected by wilds in free spins
Mega Moolah Games Global (formerly Microgaming) Lower than most, because part of each stake funds the jackpots Progressive jackpot network
Sugar Rush Pragmatic Play 96.50% Cluster pays on a 7×7 grid, spot multipliers up to 128×
The Dog House Pragmatic Play 96.51% 5×3, 20 lines, multiplier wilds, sticky wilds in free spins
Book of Dead Play’n GO Up to 96.21% 10 lines, free spins with a special expanding symbol

The published returns of the best-known slots sit between about 96% and 96.7%, apart from progressive jackpot games such as Mega Moolah, which return less to fund the jackpot.

Starburst

NetEnt’s Starburst, released in 2012, is still the most searched slot title from the UAE. It is a simple 5×3 game with 10 fixed lines that pay both ways and a published RTP of 96.09%. Its only real feature is the Starburst Wild: it appears on the middle three reels, expands to fill the reel and gives a free respin, up to three times. With no free spins round and modest top prizes, it is a low-volatility game — wins come often but are small — which is why it is a common choice for free-spin offers. NetEnt has been part of Evolution since 2020.

Gates of Olympus

Pragmatic Play’s Gates of Olympus uses six tumbling reels where symbols pay anywhere: 8 to 30 matching symbols win up to 50× the stake. Multiplier symbols worth up to 500× can land in the base game and in free spins, and four or more scatters trigger 15 free spins, during which multipliers are added to a running total applied to every win. Its published RTP is 96.50%. Gates of Olympus 1000, the sequel, raises the multipliers to 1,000× and lets you buy the bonus for 100× your bet — with the same 96.50% RTP published.

Sweet Bonanza

Sweet Bonanza, also from Pragmatic Play, uses the same pay-anywhere idea with a candy theme: 8 to 12 or more matching symbols win, and four to six scatters award up to 100× and 10 free spins. During the free spins, multiplier symbols worth between 2× and 100× can land, and at the end of a tumbling sequence their values are added together and applied to the win. Its published RTP is 96.48%.

Big Bass Bonanza

Big Bass Bonanza, developed by Reel Kingdom and distributed by Pragmatic Play, started a whole series of fishing slots. Fish symbols carry cash values of up to 2,000× the stake, and in free spins — 10, 15 or 20 for three, four or five scatters — fisherman wilds collect every fish on screen. Every fourth wild retriggers the round with 10 more spins, first with a 2× multiplier, then 3× and finally 10×. At 96.71%, it has the highest published RTP of the slots in our table.

Sugar Rush

Sugar Rush is a cluster-pays slot on a 7×7 grid: clusters of five to fifteen or more matching symbols win up to 150× in the base game. When a symbol wins, its spot is marked; another win on that spot in the same spin adds a multiplier starting at 2× and doubling up to 128×. Three to seven scatters award 10 to 30 free spins, during which marked spots and multipliers stay for the whole round. Published RTP: 96.50%.

The Dog House

The Dog House is a more traditional 5×3 video slot with 20 lines. Wilds on reels two, three and four carry multipliers, and in the free spins round wilds become sticky, staying in place to stack wins. Pragmatic Play publishes an RTP of 96.51%, and the game has been followed by Megaways and other sequels.

Book of Dead

Play’n GO’s Book of Dead, released on 14 January 2016, is the best-known “book” slot. Three scatter symbols award 10 free spins, and before they start one symbol is chosen at random as a special expanding symbol: when it can complete a win, it grows to cover its whole reel, and these expanded symbols do not need to be next to each other. Three more scatters during the feature add 10 spins. Its top RTP setting is 96.21%, but Book of Dead is one of the games most often found at lower settings, so check the information screen.

Mega Moolah

Mega Moolah is the best-known progressive jackpot slot, with four jackpots that grow with every stake placed across the casinos on its network. On 27 April 2021 a player in Belgium won €19,430,723 on Absolootly Mad: Mega Moolah, the record for an online slot jackpot. The price of those jackpots is a lower base-game return than a standard slot, because part of every stake goes into the jackpot pools.

Progressive Jackpot Slots

A progressive jackpot grows each time someone plays. A small part of every stake goes into the pool, which keeps rising until it is won and then resets to a seed amount. There are three main kinds:

Type Where the pool comes from Typical size
Standalone One game at one casino Smallest
In-house Several games at the same casino or brand Medium
Networked One game across many casinos and countries Largest — the multi-million prizes

Two points matter before you play one. First, the jackpot is a very rare event; the slot’s day-to-day return is lower than an ordinary slot’s because the jackpot contribution is taken out of it. Second, some jackpots can only be won at the maximum stake, or are more likely at higher stakes — read the rules screen. “Must drop” jackpots, which have to be paid before reaching a set amount, are a variation found at some casinos.

Slots Compared With Other Casino Games

Slots are the easiest casino game to play and, for most titles, one of the more expensive. They are also the fastest: a slot spin takes a few seconds, while a hand of live blackjack or a spin of live roulette takes much longer. The house edge applies to every bet, so speed multiplies cost.

Game Typical house edge Bets per hour (typical) Skill involved
Blackjack (basic strategy, good rules) About 0.5% Low to moderate Yes — decisions change the odds
Baccarat — Banker bet 1.06% Moderate No
European roulette 2.70% Moderate No
Slot at 96.5% RTP 3.5% Very high — hundreds of spins No
Slot at 94.5% RTP 5.5% Very high No
Progressive jackpot slot Often higher Very high No

A slot can still be a reasonable choice if you play at a stake that suits your budget and you value the entertainment. But if you want the lowest cost per dirham wagered, table games are cheaper. Our roulette guide and casino games guide compare the odds of every category.

Slot Providers

Casinos do not make most of the slots they offer; they license them from studios. The studio sets the maths, gets the game certified and supplies it to many casinos. Some of the names you will see most often:

Pragmatic Play Gates of Olympus, Sweet Bonanza, Sugar Rush, The Dog House; distributes Reel Kingdom’s Big Bass series; also live casino —

Slots on Play971

Play971, run by Coin Technology Projects LLC, is the only online casino licensed by the GCGRA, so it is the only place where people in the UAE can legally play slots online. Opened from the UAE on 21 October 2026, its casino lobby showed:

Category Games
Slots 124
Bonus Buy 24
Original 6
Megaways 2
Live games 30
Hot games 18

The lobby has a dedicated Endorphina row, themed rows such as “Jokers & Lucky 7s” and “Animal Kingdom”, and a banner for IGT’s PlayDigital titles including Cleopatra, Wheel of Fortune and Cash Eruption. New releases listed that day included 3 Coin Towers, Grand Hotel Royale, Ancient Triton, Nazar Wishes and Burning Coins 40. A banner promoted “instant timeouts”, one of the player controls a GCGRA licence requires.

The selection is far smaller than an offshore casino’s thousands of titles, and several of the internationally popular games in our table were not in the lobby. In exchange, play is legal, balances are in dirhams, and you have a UAE regulator to complain to. To play you must be 21 or over, verify your account with an Emirates ID and be physically in the UAE with location services turned on — the site asked for geo-location as soon as it opened.

Slot Machines in the UAE: Wynn Al Marjan Island

The UAE has no casino with slot machines open yet. The first will be Wynn Al Marjan Island in Ras Al Khaimah, which holds the GCGRA’s only land-based gaming licence and is expected to open in September 2027. The suppliers on the GCGRA register show what will be on its floor: Aristocrat, IGT, Light & Wonder (LNW Gaming), Konami and Novomatic — the biggest names in casino slot machines — all hold GCGRA vendor licences.

Land-based slots in licensed markets are certified to GLI-11, the same family of standards the GCGRA uses, and their RTP is set by the machine’s configuration, which the regulator approves. Our Ras Al Khaimah casino guide covers who will be allowed in.

Are Online Slots Legal in the UAE?

Only on Play971. Gambling in the UAE is legal only through operators licensed by the GCGRA, and Play971 is the only online one. Slots at offshore casinos — including those licensed in Curaçao, Malta or Anjouan — are unlicensed gambling under UAE law: Article 461 of the Crimes and Penalties Law (Federal Decree-Law No. 31 of 2021) punishes whoever gambles with up to two years in prison or a fine of up to AED 50,000. A foreign licence does not change this. Free demo slots and “social casino” apps that use virtual coins with no cash value are a different matter, because no money can be won. Our UAE gambling laws guide explains the full picture.

How to Choose an Online Slot

01

Check the RTP in the game’s information screen. Prefer 96% or more, and compare it with the provider’s published figure.

02

Pick a volatility that matches your budget. Small budget, low or medium volatility; accept that high volatility can end a session quickly.

03

Read the paytable. See what triggers the bonus and what the top prizes are as multiples of your stake.

04

Try the demo first if one is offered — the maths is the same as the real-money version at the same RTP setting.

05

Set your stake from your budget, not the other way round: a budget of AED 200 at AED 2 a spin is only 100 spins.

06

Check where you are playing. In the UAE, only Play971 is licensed.

Slot Myths

Myth Reality
“This slot is due to pay” Every spin is independent; past spins change nothing
“Slots pay more at night or on weekends” The RTP is fixed by the game’s configuration, not the clock
“Stopping the reels early changes the result” The result is decided when you press spin
“Autoplay pays less than manual spins” Both use the same RNG and maths
“A big win means the slot is now cold” The game does not remember wins
“Higher stakes improve the RTP” Usually not — except where a jackpot can only be won at certain stakes
“There is a system to beat slots” No staking pattern changes the house edge

Slots have no memory and no clock: the only number that decides what a game pays back over time is its RTP.

Bonus Buys and Free Spin Offers

Bonus buys let you skip the base game and pay a fixed price — 100× your bet in Gates of Olympus 1000 — to start the free spins at once. The RTP of the bought feature is usually similar to the game’s overall RTP, so it does not make the slot cheaper; it makes you spend much faster. At AED 2 a spin, one buy costs AED 200. Some regulators, including Great Britain’s, ban the feature for that reason.

Free spins offers from casinos are a promotion, not a feature of the game. They are usually tied to one slot, at a fixed stake, and their winnings usually carry a wagering requirement before they can be withdrawn. Our casino bonuses guide explains how wagering works.

Free Slots and Demo Play

Most providers offer demo versions of their slots, played with virtual credits. A demo is the best way to learn how a game works and how volatile it feels, at no cost. Two cautions: a demo cannot tell you which RTP version a real-money casino runs, and “free slots” apps in app stores are social games that sell virtual coins with no cash value — they are designed to keep you playing, and spending on coins is real money even if the coins are not.

At Play971 some demos are only available after you log in — its Archer game, for example, cannot be tried without an account.

Playing Slots on Mobile

Almost every modern slot is built “mobile first” in HTML5 and plays in a phone browser exactly as on a computer, with the same RTP. Play971 has no app; it runs in the browser at play971.ae. Our casino apps guide explains the difference between apps and mobile sites.

Because Play971 must confirm that you are in the UAE, it checks your location on mobile too: its help centre tells Android users to give the browser permission for precise location, and its games will not open with location services switched off. Any download that calls itself the “Play971 app” does not come from the operator.

Managing Your Slot Budget

Slots are the fastest casino game: a spin takes a few seconds and autoplay removes the pause between them. That speed is what turns a small house edge into a real cost. Before you play, decide three things in dirhams:

Decision Example
Session budget — money you can afford to lose AED 200
Stake per spin — a small fraction of the budget AED 1 (200 spins)
Stop point — when you walk away, win or lose When the AED 200 is gone, or when the balance doubles

Use the tools your casino offers: deposit limits, session reminders, time-outs and self-exclusion. On Play971 these are under Player Controls, and its self-exclusion lasts at least six months.

Play Responsibly

Slots are designed to be entertaining, and that includes the near misses, celebration sounds and “wins” that pay back less than you staked. Treat the money you spend as the price of entertainment, never as a way to make money or recover losses. If you find yourself chasing losses, playing longer than you meant to or hiding your spending, stop and talk to someone. Confidential help is available from BeGambleAware.
