Keno: How It Works, Real Odds and the Best Number of Picks

Keno is a lottery-style casino game in which you pick numbers and win according to how many of them are drawn. It is pure chance, and what decides your cost is the paytable: Spribe’s online Keno pays back 97% whether you pick one number or ten.

Other keno games set their own paytables, so the return you get depends on the game you choose. In the UAE, the only licensed online casino, Play971, lists a keno game, Keno Rush, among its Originals.

This guide explains how keno works, the real odds of catching your numbers in classic 80-ball keno and in Spribe’s 36-number online version — calculated by us from the paytable in Spribe’s official demo — why the number of picks changes how you win but not what you pay, what 200 rounds look like, and where keno stands in the UAE. How Online Keno Works

A round of keno takes seconds online. The steps are the same in almost every version:

01

Choose your stake. In Spribe’s demo the stake was set to USD 0.30 a round by default.

02

Pick your numbers. Tap the numbers you want — from one up to the game’s maximum — or press “Random” to let the game choose.

03

Check the paytable. As you pick, the game shows what each number of “catches” pays. It changes with every number you add.

04

Play the round. The game draws its numbers — 10 out of 36 in Spribe’s Keno, 20 out of 80 in classic keno.

05

Get paid by catches. Your payout is the multiplier for the number of your picks that were drawn. The order and position of the numbers do not matter.

Keno is the same idea as a lottery, run every few seconds instead of twice a week. That speed is what makes it costly: a small edge on each round adds up quickly over hundreds of rounds.

Classic Keno: 80 Numbers, 20 Drawn

Classic keno, the version played in casinos since the 19th century, draws 20 balls from 80. The more numbers you pick, the harder it becomes to catch all of them. We calculated the exact chances:

Numbers picked Catch none Catch at least half Catch all of them
1 75.0% 25.0% 1 in 4
2 56.0% 44.0% 1 in 17
4 30.8% 25.9% 1 in 326
6 16.7% 16.2% 1 in 7,753
8 8.8% 10.2% 1 in 230,115
10 4.6% 6.5% 1 in 8,911,711

Our calculation, by the hypergeometric distribution.

A pick-10 player catches all ten about once in nine million games — less often than many national lottery jackpots are won. That is why classic paytables advertise large top prizes: they are paid so rarely that they cost the house little.

Spribe Keno: The Paytable and the Real Return

Online keno games set their own rules. Spribe, the studio behind the crash game Aviator, offers a Keno with 36 numbers in which you pick up to ten. When we opened Spribe’s official demo on 22 October 2026 and selected one to ten numbers, it showed these multipliers:

Picks Payout by number of catches Chance of profit Catch all Return
1 1 catch 3.49× 27.8% 1 in 4 96.9%
2 1: 1.5× · 2: 4.92× 48.4% 1 in 14 97.0%
3 1: 1× · 2: 2.3× · 3: 8.2× 18.1% 1 in 60 97.0%
4 1: 0.5× · 2: 1.82× · 3: 4.2× · 4: 21× 30.5% 1 in 280 97.0%
5 2: 1.1× · 3: 3.75× · 4: 15× · 5: 35× 42.9% 1 in 1,496 97.0%
6 2: 0.5× · 3: 2.9× · 4: 7.6× · 5: 18× · 6: 55× 19.9% 1 in 9,275 97.0%
7 2: 0.25× · 3: 2.3× · 4: 4.1× · 5: 10× · 6: 31× · 7: 60× 29.1% 1 in 69,564 97.0%
8 3: 1.4× · 4: 2.8× · 5: 11.4× · 6: 28× · 7: 40× · 8: 70× 38.9% 1 in 672,452 97.0%
9 3: 1× · 4: 2.2× · 5: 6.1× · 6: 17× · 7: 25× · 8: 55× · 9: 85× 19.3% 1 in 9.4 million 97.0%
10 3: 1× · 4: 1.5× · 5: 3.3× · 6: 10.2× · 7: 25× · 8: 40× · 9: 75× · 10: 100× 26.9% 1 in 254 million 97.0%

Paytable from Spribe’s official demo, 22 October 2026; chances and returns calculated by us. “Chance of profit” counts results that pay more than 1×.

The demo does not say how many numbers are drawn each round, but the paytable does: only with 10 numbers drawn from 36 does every row return 97%, the figure Spribe gives for the game. With 9 drawn the returns would be 70%–87%; with 11, above 100%.

Why More Picks Change How You Win, Not What You Pay

In Spribe’s Keno, every number of picks returns the same 97%. Picking more numbers does not make the game cheaper or dearer; it changes the shape of the results:

  • Two picks win something almost half the time (48.4%), with a top prize of 4.92×.
  • Ten picks return something 58% of the time, but most of those are small: three catches only give your stake back. The 100× top prize comes once in 254 million rounds.
  • Some counts — 3, 6 or 9 picks — show a profit less than one round in five, because the paytable pays nothing or less than your stake for the most common results.

The top prizes are much smaller than their odds would justify. Catching nine out of nine is a 1-in-9.4-million event that pays 85×; in practice the game’s return comes from the frequent small payouts, not the headline multiplier. In classic keno the logic is the same, only with a much bigger gap between the paytable and the true odds.

Spribe Keno: chance of a winning round by number of picks, from 18% with three picks to 48% with two, with the same 97% return for every count

What 200 Rounds Look Like

We simulated 100,000 sessions of 200 rounds at AED 5 each — AED 1,000 wagered — in Spribe’s Keno with 2, 5 and 10 picks:

Picks Sessions ending in profit Median result Average result Worst 5% of sessions Best 5% of sessions
2 37% −AED 31 −AED 29 −AED 179 or worse +AED 127 or better
5 40% −AED 41 −AED 30 −AED 268 or worse +AED 246 or better
10 36% −AED 40 −AED 30 −AED 202 or worse +AED 175 or better

Our Monte Carlo simulation, 22 October 2026.

The average loss is the same, about AED 30 per AED 1,000 wagered, whichever number of picks you choose — the 3% the game keeps. What changes is the spread: five picks gave both the deepest losses and the best wins in our runs. About six sessions in ten end down, whatever you pick.

What Decides a Keno Game’s Return

Factor What it does Example
Numbers in the pool Sets how likely each pick is to be drawn 1–80 in classic keno, 1–36 in Spribe Keno
Numbers drawn More numbers drawn means more catches 20 of 80 classic; 10 of 36 in Spribe Keno
Paytable Decides what each number of catches pays — and so the return Spribe pays 3.49× for 1 of 1 and 100× for 10 of 10
Number of picks Changes how often and how much you win; in Spribe Keno, not the return 97% from 1 to 10 picks
Published RTP The game’s own statement of its long-run return Spribe Keno: 97%

The odds of catching your numbers are fixed by the pool and the draw; the paytable decides what you get back for them. That is why two games both called “Keno” can return very different amounts, and why the published RTP in the game’s information screen is the number to check before you play. Spribe publishes 97%, and our calculation from its demo paytable confirms it.

Keno Strategy: What Works and What Doesn’t

What works is short: choose a game with a published high return, decide how many picks suit the kind of results you want, set a budget in dirhams, and stop when it is gone.

What doesn’t work:

  • Hot and cold numbers. Every draw is independent. A number that has come up five times in a row is no more and no less likely next time.
  • Patterns on the board. Rows, corners, birthdays or “lucky” numbers have exactly the same odds as any other set.
  • Same numbers every round. Keeping your numbers, or changing them, has no effect on the result.
  • Betting systems. Raising your stake after losses changes how fast you lose, not the 3% the game keeps — and with 100× as the top prize, a long losing run can wipe out a budget quickly.

Keno Compared With Lotteries and Other Casino Games

Game Approximate return
Blackjack, good rules and basic strategy About 99.5%
European roulette 97.3%
Spribe Keno 97%
The UAE Lottery Lucky Day About 40% (our estimate)

Keno is often compared with the lottery, and the comparison favours a good online keno game: The UAE Lottery’s Lucky Day returns about 40% of its AED 50 price on average, by our estimate in our UAE Lottery guide. The trade-off is speed — a lottery is drawn twice a week; a keno round takes seconds. If you like simple, fast number games, our Plinko and crash games guides cover two more.

Keno return compared: blackjack about 99.6%, European roulette 97.3%, Spribe Keno 97.0% and the UAE Lottery Lucky Day about 40%

Keno on Play971

Play971, run by Coin Technology Projects LLC, is the only online casino licensed by the UAE’s federal regulator, the GCGRA. When we opened its lobby from the UAE on 21 October 2026, its Originals category included Keno Rush, alongside Wheel of Fortune, Pawsome Plinko, Mini Lootbox and Mini Mines. Play is in dirhams, you must be 21 or over and physically in the UAE, and accounts are verified with an Emirates ID. Open the game’s information screen to see its numbers, paytable and RTP before you play. Our Play971 guide explains how to register and pay.

Because Play971 runs in dirhams, there is no currency conversion on your stake or your winnings — unlike the USD balances used by many international casinos.

Is Keno Legal in the UAE?

Keno played for money is gambling, and in the UAE gambling is legal only through operators licensed by the GCGRA. Outside that system the Crimes and Penalties Law (Federal Decree-Law No. 31 of 2021) applies: Article 461 punishes whoever gambles with up to two years in prison or a fine of up to AED 50,000, and Article 462 punishes whoever organises gambling with up to ten years and a fine of at least AED 100,000. Offshore casinos offering keno are not licensed in the UAE, whatever licence they hold abroad. Our UAE gambling laws guide explains the full framework.

Play Responsibly

Keno is quick and repetitive, and the “random” button makes it easy to play hundreds of rounds without noticing. Set a budget in dirhams before you start, and stop when it is gone. Never chase losses or borrow to play. Confidential help is available from BeGambleAware.
